Installing A Keyless Entry: Benefits And How To DIY

In today’s fast-paced world, time is precious. That’s why more and more people are turning to installing a keyless entry or a smart lock for their home to save time and hassle. By installing a keyless entry system, there’s no need to fumble around for keys when you’re trying to unlock the front door.

Say you want to be installing a keyless entry system for your home. Can you do it yourself?

Absolutely! In this guide, we’ll take you through the steps on how you can go about installing a keyless entry system for your home.

What Are Keyless Door Locks?

Keyless door locks are a type of electronic door lock that uses a code or keycard to unlock the door. They are often used in commercial and industrial settings but are also becoming increasingly popular for use in residential homes.

In the past, most door locks required a physical key to open. However, recent advances in technology have led to the development of keyless door locks. These locks use electronic sensors to identify authorized users and unlock the door when the correct code or fingerprint is presented. Keyless locks offer a number of advantages over traditional locks, including convenience, security, and flexibility.

Is A Keyless Door Lock The Same As A Smart Door Lock?

At first glance, keyless door locks and smart locks may appear to be the same. Both are electronic locks that allow you to enter your home without using a traditional key. However, there are some important differences between these two types of locks.

Smart door locks are typically connected to a home automation system. This allows you to control the lock using a mobile app or a voice assistant such as Amazon Alexa or Google Home.

In contrast, keyless door locks are not typically connected to a home automation system. This means that you will need to use a physical key or keypad to unlock the door. However, some keyless door locks do offer features such as fingerprint recognition or automatic locking.

As you can see, there are some important differences between keyless door locks and smart door locks. When choosing a lock for your home, it is important to consider your needs and preferences.

What Are The Benefits Of Installing A Keyless Entry Door Lock?

Installing a keyless entry system offers multiple benefits for your home. When your hands are full or you’re in a hurry, you can simply swipe the key fob or quickly enter the code and push the door open which is far easier than fumbling around trying to find your house keys. Electronic door locks are most commonly used on the front door, for convenience reasons, but also because of the outstanding security features provided.

By installing a keyless entry system lock, it also tends to be more tamper-resistant than traditional locks, making them an excellent choice for security-conscious homeowners. In order to stay on top of home security you should change the access code frequently, just as you would an email password. Luckily, key codes can be easily changed with the tap of a finger and the use of a smartphone app.

These access codes can be changed to offer temporary access for guests or tradesmen. So, you don’t have to worry about collecting a key after they’re done, and if a key gets forgotten you don’t have to rekey your locks.

The device can be linked to an alarm that will activate if the wrong code is entered more than 4 times. In the case of more advanced smart lock systems, they can be integrated into your smart home system that will automatically turn on other systems, like lights or heating when a person unlocks the front door.

Keyless entry systems are very helpful if you have young children who may forget to lock the door behind them. When the door closes it will automatically lock. All in all, a keyless lock offers a number of benefits that make them an attractive option for both homeowners and businesses alike.

DIY – Installing A Keyless Entry At Home

Keyless entry systems are essentially electronic locks that use either a keypad or key fob to activate the locking mechanism. When you are installing a keyless entry lock yourself, make sure you purchase one that fits your door width.

Step 1: Remove the old lock

Before installing a keyless entry lock, you’ll need to remove the existing lock set.

Firstly remove the old deadbolt and door knob. To do this you need to release the knob or door handle using the notch at the side.

Once the handle is off you can remove the screws in the face plate and pull the spindle from the door frame.

Step 2: Remove the latch

The next step to removing your existing lock set is to remove the latch. Using a screwdriver unscrew the face plate and the strike plate on the door frame. Once this is unscrewed you should easily be able to pull the latch out of the recess in the door.

Step 3: Install keyless entry lock set

A common problem when people purchase a keyless entry lockset is that the recess in the door edge is too small for the lock set. You’ll have to double-check this and if necessary chisel out a bigger recess first before installing a keyless entry lock.

Insert the latch and screw in the face plate to the door. Then you can secure the keypad part to the outside of the door.
Usually, this just connects with the latch inside, slides on, and can be screwed to the door. Repeat for the mounting plate on the inside of the door. You should be able to get a deadbolt and handle set that uses the same key. In emergencies or if the device has a flat battery you can use a manual key override.

Don’t forget the strike plate on the door frame. Sometimes people will leave it off with just the hole in the timber for the latch to go into. However, you lose strength in the deadbolt as the door could easily be kicked open without the metal strike plate to reinforce it.

Step 4: Program your new keyless entry lock

Once you have finished installing a keyless entry lock, you need to program the device. Carefully read the operating manual to program and confirm a keypad code or program the key fob.

Step 5: Test the keyless entry lock

Give your new lock a thorough test run. If you have any problems after you are done installing a keyless entry, testing it out will ensure that everything works perfectly.

If you do have any major problems, you can always call a licensed locksmith from Locksmith Tacoma to take over and finish installing a keyless entry for you.

What Is The Typical Battery Life On A Keyless Entry Device?

When it comes to keyless entry devices, battery life is an important consideration. Most devices use either AA or AAA batteries, and the size of the battery will affect how long the device will last. In general, AA batteries will last for about six months, while AAA batteries will last for up to twelve months. Of course, actual battery life will vary depending on how often the device is used.

For example, if you only use your keyless entry device to unlock your door a few times a week, you can expect the batteries to last for several years. However, if you use it multiple times a day, you may need to replace the batteries every few months.

Ultimately, the best way to ensure that your keyless entry device always has enough power is to keep a spare set of batteries on hand. That way, you can be sure that you’ll never be locked out of your home.

Can You Get Wireless Capability With A Home Keyless Entry System?

These days, it seems like everything is wireless. From our phones to our laptops, we’re used to being able to access the internet and our favorite programs without being tethered to a physical connection. So it’s no surprise that many people are wondering if they can get wireless capability with a home keyless entry system.

The answer is yes! There are a number of companies that offer wireless keyless entry systems for homes. These systems typically work by connecting to your home’s Wi-Fi network and then using an app on your phone to unlock the door. They’re a great option if you’re looking for a more convenient way to enter your home, and they can even help improve security by allowing you to see who is coming and going.
